Ducted systems are growing in popularity as a hidden solution for a healthy, comfortable home, all year round. We spoke to Beattie Air to find out more about ducted systems.

In the modern home, energy-efficient heating, cooling, and ventilation systems are essential. Ducted systems offer a seamless, powerful solution, hidden in the ceiling for year-round comfort.

Established in 1988, Beattie Air is a comprehensive provider of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) solutions for both residential and commercial projects. With a robust portfolio that includes medical gas, chilled water (CHW) systems, low-temperature hot water (LTHW) systems, variable refrigerant volume systems, and more, Christchurch-based Beattie Air has become an expert in the industry, and within that, ducted systems.

A ducted system is an unobtrusive solution for home comfort. Fitted within the ceiling space or under the floor, it is ducted around the home, and each space is fitted with personalised grilles. "This provides an all-over comfort and high-level heating and cooling distribution,” explains Dave Mather, General Manager of Beattie Air. Rather than working within a single room, ducted systems offer central heating, and their benefits are felt around the entire home.

The allure of a ducted system lies in its ability to merge functionality with aesthetics. The hidden, quiet, and energy-efficient solution ensures healthy air and personalised comfort.

Compared to conventional solutions, the discreet nature of ducted systems is a standout feature. They can be fitted in new and existing homes. While existing homes undergo thorough assessments to guarantee the system's fit and functionality, new homes' plans are thoroughly reviewed and even modelled if necessary to confirm the optimal fit.

The noise produced is minimised as they are fitted within the ceiling space. Beattie Air considers its placement and materials carefully to maximise this benefit. “Where possible, we install above spaces such as bathrooms and laundries to reduce any noises over living spaces,” Dave shares. “The indoor unit is also lined with acoustic material.”

Working on the same principle as all heat pumps, ducted systems benefit from a coefficient performance of up to five. In practice, this means 1kw of energy going in produces 5kw out, saving financial and environmental resources. The one-time investment provides long-term savings that will be felt for years to come.

The solution also improves indoor air quality by employing a circulation system that filters air particles and dust back into the unit. This proactive filtration mechanism ensures the air you breathe is cleaner, fresher, and your home healthier. With higher insulation building standards for new homes, this becomes particularly important to prevent moisture ingress, dampness, and mould.

With zoning capabilities, temperature can be personalised by room. For some homeowners, for instance, families with young children, this is a particularly important concern. "Zone control helps manage temperatures and airflow for each room and can close down areas not in use," Dave explains. This level of control allows homeowners to tailor their environment to their preferences and needs.

The installation of ducted systems closely mirrors traditional heat pump systems, with special attention to the placement of grilles. To maintain their optimal function for years to come, Dave advises, “Clean the filter every three months, wash the outdoor unit and clear away debris. A service every 12 months will ensure the system is running effectively and reduce running costs.”

As technology advances, so will the world of ducted systems, but Dave's advice remains consistent: “Engage with people who have the experience and knowledge to design and install these systems.”

Ducted systems are the epitome of discreet and efficient heating, cooling, and ventilation solutions. By working with an experienced provider such as Beattie Air, these systems offer homeowners a seamless combination of home comfort and aesthetic appeal, all year round.
