Co-founder of Baina Bailey Meredith and her insurance broker husband Ali Williams renovated this two-bedroom home in Auckland’s Titirangi with architectural designer Zoe Fahey and landscape designer Jared Lockhart. Sometimes, opting to make the best of things can be an even more exciting prospect than starting over somewhere new.
Ali, Bailey and Gruff the dog on their back deck designed by Jared Lockhart, with August chairs and an August side table by Serax from Simon James behind them. Bailey says they really enjoy living in Titirangi. “We love taking Gruff to Piha Beach, and being far enough from the city that it’s quiet, but close enough that I can whip in and meet a friend for a wine or a pilates class. It’s the perfect balance.”

KITCHEN Floor-to-ceiling walnut-veneer cabinetry replaced a window in this generous but well-used space. “I always wanted stainless steel,” says Bailey about the utilitarian benchtop and splashback. “We were set on a minimal look and didn’t want a join in the benchtop, so that was a challenge when it came to bringing in the L-shaped piece. Seven guys attempted to place it, but ended up having to cut some of the wall to get it in without disturbing the cabinetry!” Bailey kept the handles here to a minimum as well, using D Pulls by Häfele only where strictly necessary. The appliances are by Fisher and Paykel and Westinghouse, and the Elysian mixer is from ABI Interiors.

BATHROOM Here, a leggy DuraStyle vanity by Durafit is teamed with Milani tapware from ABI Interiors. The ceramic wall and floor tiles from Artedomus have a matte finish that Bailey sought to sync with the look of the Oasis freestanding bath by Concrete Nation, and the walls are in Porter’s Paints Cashmere to match the other main rooms in the house. On the vanity and Grab 90 rails by Avenir from Plumbline are organic cotton towels by Bailey’s own luxury brand, Baina. Pictured right, a large, frosted-glass window opens like a door to provide maximum ventilation in this space. “In the morning, the sun streams in through it — it’s beautiful,” says Bailey.
