Oil on canvas 'Vase of flowers' signed Bierand (Georges Bierand)

Georges Bierand was born in Brussels in 1895 and was a talented painter of landscapes, portraits and is particularly well known for his floral compositions. It appears that Bierand was a self-taught artist, as he is not recorded as having attended any of the Belgian teaching academies. Georges Bierand was given his first solo exhibition at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels in 1912, when he was just seventeen years old. His career accelerated in the years shortly before WWI and he was soon receiving invitations to participate in exhibitions as far afield as Paris, Geneva, Algiers and Nice. His work treads a fine line betweenImpressionism and Modernism. In 1926 he exhibited for the first time at the prestigious Salon Triennale in Brussels and the following year he was honoured with a second solo exhibition at the Palais des Beaux-Arts. Georges Bierand received great critical and public acclaim and for his services to Belgian art he was made a member of the Royal Society of Fine Arts, a Chevalier of the Order of Couronne and a Chevalier of the Order of Leopold.
